GBV! GBV! Yes, you read that headline correct. Guided By Voices are reuniting and they’re playing Matador‘s 21st birthday bash in Las Vegas on October 1- 3. One of the most charismatic indie rock bands from the 90s who knew how to throw down on stage when it came to performing (and drinking) is back after their abrupt end to their endless (but great) stream of releases. Now, the only question is: Does this mean they’ll be releasing a new album?
If you thought this reunion was the greatest news you could have read all day, just wait until you put it in its entire context. Yes, GBV is reuniting and they will actually be playing a live show again (with the original ’93 – ’96 lineup) but this show of theirs also includes Pavement, Sonic Youth, Belle & Sebastian, Spoon, Yo La Tengo, and PLENTY MORE. Check the entire line up out after the jump!

Beginning the Sunday night homestretch of rock greatness—Spoon, Pavement, Thom Yorke—Yo La Tengo’s late afternoon set yesterday at Coachella felt far too small and intimate for the main Coachella Stage, with the band vacillating between fairly listless ballads (paradoxically always a strong suit on their records; see: And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out’s “Our Way To Fall”) and charging indie rockers with a laidback insouciance that was a little less than exhilarating.

Yo La Tengo is back with another video to promote their upcoming album, Popular Songs, via Matador Records on September 8th. Their video for “Here To Fall” is the first to kick off a series of five video clips all leading up to the album’s release.
For a band who’s been in the game for 25 years, Yo La Tengo continues to reinvent themselves and this video is brilliantly directed by John McSwain. The shoegaze “Here To Fall” is a departure from their alternative rock sound, but gives you a “mellow yellow” vibe from the first measure. As for the video, it starts out a bit slow and one can get impatient for something to happen but when it does, it’s amazing. By the end of this video, it’s hard to believe something so simple can be incredibly trippy. Stoners and happy pill people, this video is for you. It’s even better than the first time you saw Feist‘s “1234″ while you were blazed out of your mind.
If the rest of the videos in this series are as textured as this one, we can’t wait for the following four. Check “Here To Fall” out below and let us know what you think!

Next up at Pitchfork was one of my personal favorites Yo La Tengo, who opened up their set with a new song called “Here to Fall,” which was absolutely enjoyable. As we listened to the delicious mellow tones of Ira Kaplan, others danced and sang. Even as they grow older Yo La Tengo with 15 albums under their belt still can put on an amazing show.

There’s some folk-rock, power-pop and indie-rock in this week’s new music round up; it’s a lot of dashes, but this quartet of old faves and new classics has us waiting excitedly to get our hands on their music.
Known to music lovers as the band that put the power in power pop, Big Star might not be as popular today, generally speaking, as some of their ‘70s counterparts, but their influence on those producing melodic, pop-rock is indisputable. That said, fans will be happy to know that four discs worth of unreleased demos, alternate takes, rarities, and live cuts are set for release this fall when Rhino releases Keep An Eye On The Sky on September 15.

The Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona, Spain is off to a great start, with multiple bands performing simultaneously on six different stages. The turnout exceeds all expectations, and each act has been heavily populated. I imagined that the festival would be spread out, but the stages are very close to each other, and it’s been possible to jump from show to show quickly.
So far, I’ve seen Marnie Stern at the Ray-Ban Vice stage, Lightning Bolt at the ATP arena and Yo La Tengo at the Estrella Damm stage. At the same time, La Bien Querida, Magik Markers, The Vaselines and The Bats have made their appearances on other stages. If you’re looking to rock out while also fitting in a good dose of dancing to electronica, then Primavera Sound has you covered. Check out the video coverage for day one, day two and day three.
